I am filling out the cover art form for Daddy Wanted. I know what my heroine looks like and I know what my hero looks like. I have cover ideas. The problem is I have too many ideas. All the scenes in the book run through my head and I find it difficult to narrow down the choices.
I know simple is better. Too busy is not good. Too dark is bad. In today's world, a cover needs to be stunning though only an inch in height. I put together the cover for the current edition of Prince of the Mist. I know it is not an award-winning design, but it has been able to catch the attention of readers and that is what it was supposed to do.
But what about Daddy Wanted? Should there be a man on the cover or a woman? Do women readers of romance seek to identify with a beautiful woman, or are they longing to gaze at a handsome man?
What's your opinion?

I'd need to know a bit more. Is the story about a single woman wanting desperately to have a child? If so, a lonely woman sitting in a park with perhaps a swing set in the background. Is it about a single mother whose child longs for a daddy? If so, a mother and child. You might think that having a child or something child-related on the cover messes up the picture of a romance novel, but as the title already suggests the existence of a child...

Wow! You've got some great ideas. Putting a swing set in the background is clever. :^).
I think if the story is spicy and sexy, a male should be on the story. If it's a sweet romance, a woman on the cover would be fine. Just my opinion!

My Prince of the Mist cover obviously worked. If women are attracted to book covers with men, then for marketing purposes the covers should have men on them.
Although, romances are also known for couples on the cover, too. I really want to see a survey done to see what people prefer.
How about a pregnant woman, like Karina said, but a gnarly dirty woman with missing teeth standing in the door of a rusty trailer with a whole lotta filthy kids hanging on her and looking out the windows. Like Old Mother Hubbard trailer trash.
Seriously though, it's hard to picck a cover without knowing the story.
